Anthropometric assessment
Framing
- Anthropometric measures (BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, skinfold thickness) provide simple, low-cost proxies for body composition and adiposity distribution - each with distinct strengths and limitations, and waist-to-hip ratio in particular better reflecting the visceral adiposity most strongly linked to metabolic/cardiovascular risk than BMI alone
- None of these measures directly quantifies body fat - they are practical surrogates, and their limitations (BMI not distinguishing muscle from fat, for example) should inform how confidently results are interpreted in atypical body compositions
