Anti-Müllerian hormone as marker of ovarian reserve
Core concept
- Glycoprotein of the TGF-beta family, produced by GRANULOSA CELLS of pre-antral and small antral follicles
- -> level is proportional to the size of the remaining growing follicle pool, which tracks the primordial pool
- Not gonadotrophin-dependent and largely stable across the menstrual cycle - can be taken on any day, unlike FSH and oestradiol
- Function: restrains recruitment of primordial follicles and reduces FSH sensitivity of growing follicles - a brake on follicle depletion
- In the male fetus: Sertoli-cell AMH causes Mullerian duct regression - its absence gives persistent Mullerian duct syndrome
