  • Precision and validity are distinct measurement quality concepts - precision reflects reproducibility/consistency of a measurement (low random error), while validity reflects whether a measurement actually captures the true value of what it intends to measure (low systematic error/bias) - a measurement can be precise but invalid (consistently wrong) or valid but imprecise (correct on average but variable), and understanding this distinction is foundational to critically appraising any clinical measurement or study result
