Carcinoid tumour marker tests - chromogranin A

Role

  • Chromogranin A is a general marker of neuroendocrine secretory granule content, elevated across a broad range of neuroendocrine tumours (not specific to carcinoid) - used for diagnosis support, disease burden estimation, and treatment monitoring, complementing the more specific 5-HIAA test for carcinoid syndrome specifically
  • Widely used across neuroendocrine tumour diagnosis and follow-up given its broad applicability beyond carcinoid tumours alone (also elevated in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, phaeochromocytoma, and other neuroendocrine neoplasms)
