- Valvular heart disease is classified by valve (aortic, mitral, tricuspid) and lesion type (stenosis vs regurgitation) - each combination producing a distinct murmur, haemodynamic burden, and natural history, with echocardiography as the central investigation for grading severity and timing intervention
- Symptom onset, more than severity grading alone, is often the key trigger for intervention (valve replacement/repair) in chronic valvular disease, since asymptomatic severe disease can sometimes be managed expectantly with surveillance
