Determinants of intracranial pressure (hypercarbia, hyponatraemia, cerebral blood flow)
Core concept
- Monro-Kellie doctrine: skull is a fixed volume containing brain (~80%), blood (~10%), CSF (~10%) - an increase in one requires a reciprocal decrease in another or ICP rises
- Normal ICP 7-15 mmHg (adult, supine)
- Cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) = MAP - ICP - the driving pressure for cerebral blood flow, autoregulated ~50-150 mmHg MAP in health
