Diabetes-related investigations - acid–base investigations
Role
- Venous or arterial blood gas acid-base analysis is central to diagnosing and grading severity of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) - a high anion gap metabolic acidosis from ketone body accumulation - and distinguishing it from hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state, which typically lacks significant acidosis
- Performed in any patient with suspected DKA (hyperglycaemia with symptoms of ketosis - nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, Kussmaul breathing) given its central role in both diagnosis and severity grading, which determines treatment intensity
