- Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite causing mild/asymptomatic infection in immunocompetent hosts but significant disease in two vulnerable groups - primary infection during pregnancy (congenital toxoplasmosis risk) and reactivation in advanced immunosuppression (particularly cerebral toxoplasmosis in advanced HIV)
