Markers of endocrine neoplasia
Overview
- Endocrine tumour biochemical markers span hormone products directly secreted by the tumour (functional markers, e.g. calcitonin for medullary thyroid carcinoma, catecholamine metabolites for phaeochromocytoma) and general tumour markers (e.g. chromogranin A) - functional markers are generally both more sensitive and more specific for their associated tumour type than general markers
- Used across the range of endocrine neoplasia, from screening at-risk individuals (e.g. MEN2 gene carriers for medullary thyroid carcinoma) to diagnosis, staging, and treatment response monitoring in confirmed disease
