Components of haemostasis

  • Five components of normal haemostasis:
    • Vessel wall
    • Platelets
    • Procoagulant factors
    • Anticoagulant proteins (antithrombin, protein C/S, TFPI)
    • Fibrinolytic system
  • Bleeding or thrombosis = failure of the balance between the last two groups, not of one factor in isolation
