Hepatitis
Framing
- Hepatitis (liver inflammation with hepatocellular injury) has viral (A-E), autoimmune, alcohol-related, and drug-induced causes - each with a distinct serological/diagnostic signature and, for the viral causes, distinct transmission routes and chronicity risk (hepatitis B and C can become chronic; hepatitis A is essentially always self-limiting)
- Interpreting hepatitis B serology (surface antigen, core antibody IgM/IgG, e-antigen) correctly is a frequently tested skill, since the combination of markers distinguishes acute infection, chronic infection, past resolved infection, and immunity from vaccination
