Indications for use of corticosteroids - hypercalcaemia and bone pain

Role

  • Corticosteroids have a role in managing pain from bone metastases (as an adjunct alongside analgesia and radiotherapy) but are not first-line treatment for malignancy-associated hypercalcaemia itself, where IV bisphosphonates/denosumab remain the definitive therapy
  • Bone pain from skeletal metastases is common in advanced cancer (particularly breast, prostate, lung, myeloma) and often requires a multimodal approach beyond simple analgesia alone
