Hypertension
Framing
- Hypertension is divided by circulation affected - systemic (the common form, itself divided into primary/essential and secondary causes) and pulmonary (a distinct, less common condition with different diagnostic criteria, classification, and treatment) - the two share the term but differ substantially in pathophysiology, investigation, and management
- Secondary causes of systemic hypertension (renal, endocrine, drug-induced) should be actively screened for in young-onset, resistant, or otherwise atypical presentations, since identifying a secondary cause can be curative rather than requiring lifelong pharmacotherapy
