Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis regulation
Core concept
- Hypothalamus (TRH) -> anterior pituitary (TSH) -> thyroid (T4/T3)
- Negative feedback: T4/T3 inhibit both TRH and TSH release -> TSH is the most sensitive marker of thyroid status (log-linear relationship with free T4)
- T4 (thyroxine) = predominant secreted hormone; peripheral deiodination (5'-deiodinase) converts T4 -> active T3 in target tissues
