- Malaria diagnosis relies on demonstrating Plasmodium parasites in blood, most commonly by thick and thin blood film microscopy (the traditional reference standard, providing species identification and parasitaemia quantification) and increasingly by rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) detecting parasite antigen, with PCR available for low-parasitaemia or species-ambiguous cases
- A critical diagnosis to consider in any febrile returned traveller from an endemic region, given the potential for rapid deterioration with Plasmodium falciparum specifically
