Definition
- Multifactorial inheritance describes conditions caused by the combined effect of multiple genes and environmental factors together - in contrast to single-gene Mendelian conditions, no single variant is necessary or sufficient to cause disease
- The majority of common adult diseases (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, most cardiovascular disease, many congenital anomalies such as neural tube defects and cleft lip/palate) follow a multifactorial rather than Mendelian pattern
