Laboratory tests - coeliac serology
The tests
- Coeliac serology - tissue transglutaminase IgA (tTG-IgA) as the standard first-line test - screens for coeliac disease with high sensitivity/specificity, but must always be interpreted alongside total IgA level given the risk of false-negative results in IgA deficiency
- Coeliac disease affects roughly 1% of the population, with testing increasingly used both for symptomatic patients and for at-risk screening (first-degree relatives, associated autoimmune conditions)
