Measures of effect - number needed to harm
Definition
- Number needed to harm is the number of patients who would need to be exposed to a treatment/risk factor for one additional person to experience a specified adverse outcome, compared with a control/unexposed group - calculated analogously to number needed to treat, but for harm rather than benefit, and both measures together inform a complete risk-benefit assessment of a treatment
- Used alongside number needed to treat to give a complete picture of a treatment's risk-benefit trade-off, particularly important for treatments with a meaningful adverse effect profile
