Medication adherence

Framing

  • Medication non-adherence is common and multifactorial - patient-related (health literacy, beliefs about medication, psychological factors), regimen-related (complexity, side effects), and system-related (cost, access) factors all contribute, and effective improvement strategies must be matched to the specific barrier identified rather than applying a generic intervention uniformly
  • Non-adherence should be actively considered whenever a patient's clinical response is unexpectedly poor, before assuming treatment failure and escalating therapy
