Definition

  • Medical futility describes treatment that offers no meaningful benefit to the patient (will not achieve its physiological goal, or achieves it without a meaningful improvement in outcome the patient would value) - clinicians are not ethically or legally obliged to offer or continue futile treatment, even if requested by the patient or family
  • A recurring, often contentious issue at the end of life, particularly around resuscitation status and escalation to intensive care in patients with advanced, irreversible illness
