- Acute metabolic derangements (acid-base disturbance, dysglycaemia, dyskalaemia, hyponatraemia) can each be rapidly life-threatening if severe or rapidly evolving - recognising the specific pattern and its underlying cause is essential since correction approach differs substantially by derangement type, and inappropriate correction (particularly of chronic hyponatraemia) can itself cause serious harm
