Role

  • DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) measures bone mineral density - in rheumatology, used both for standard osteoporosis screening and specifically to monitor bone loss associated with inflammatory rheumatic disease and its treatment (particularly long-term corticosteroid use)
  • Rheumatic disease patients carry elevated osteoporosis/fracture risk from multiple compounding factors - chronic inflammation itself (cytokine-driven bone resorption), reduced mobility, and glucocorticoid treatment - making DXA a routinely relevant test in this population beyond standard age-based screening
