Musculoskeletal radiology tests - nuclear medicine scans
Role
- Nuclear medicine bone scintigraphy (technetium-99m-labelled bisphosphonate) detects areas of increased bone turnover - in rheumatology, used for whole-body screening of polyarticular disease activity, occult fracture, and distinguishing inflammatory from mechanical causes of bone pain in specific scenarios
- Largely superseded by MRI for most focal musculoskeletal questions given MRI's superior specificity and soft-tissue detail, but retains a role for whole-body screening and specific indications where MRI is impractical (e.g. screening multiple sites simultaneously)
