- Non-nociceptive pain is a broader category encompassing pain not explained by straightforward nociceptor activation from ongoing tissue damage - including neuropathic pain specifically, but also pain with a significant psychological, social, or existential contribution ("total pain")
- Recognising a non-nociceptive contribution is common in advanced illness, where physical, psychological, social, and spiritual distress frequently interact and amplify one another rather than existing independently
