Patient and family counselling regarding findings of variants of uncertain significance (VOUS) and incidental findings in genetic testing - possibility of functional studies
What functional studies are
- Functional studies (laboratory experiments testing the actual biological effect of a specific variant) can provide direct evidence toward resolving a VOUS classification, complementing population/computational/segregation evidence
- Functional studies are resource- and time-intensive, so are generally pursued selectively - for variants where resolving the classification would have significant clinical impact, and where a validated functional assay exists for the gene/protein in question
