Peripheral neuropathy
Framing
- Peripheral neuropathy is divided into acquired (metabolic, toxic, infective, inflammatory/autoimmune - the more common category, often reversible if the cause is addressed) and hereditary (genetically determined, progressive, not reversible) - this distinction shapes both the diagnostic work-up (screening for reversible causes first) and the prognostic conversation with the patient
- Pattern recognition (length-dependent sensorimotor vs asymmetric/mononeuritis multiplex vs predominantly motor/demyelinating) narrows the differential substantially before reaching for specific serological or genetic testing
