Skin ulcers
Framing
- Chronic skin ulceration has four principal aetiologies - venous (the most common), arterial, neuropathic (diabetic), and pyoderma gangrenosum (an inflammatory, non-infective cause) - each with a distinct mechanism, typical location, and management approach, making accurate aetiological diagnosis essential before starting treatment
- Compression therapy (correct for venous ulcers) is contraindicated in significant arterial disease, illustrating why misattributing ulcer aetiology can directly cause harm rather than simply delaying healing
