- Synthetic lysine analogue - competitively blocks the lysine-binding sites on plasminogen, preventing its binding to fibrin -> inhibits plasmin-mediated fibrin degradation (antifibrinolytic)
- Does not promote new clot formation - it stabilises existing clot by preventing its breakdown
