Ulcers
Framing
- Chronic skin ulceration in older adults follows the same aetiological framework as the general skin-ulcers topic (venous, arterial, neuropathic) with two additional age-specific causes emphasised - pressure sores (immobility/reduced sensation-driven, a major preventable harm in hospitalised/care-dependent older adults) and shingles-related ulceration (post-herpetic skin breakdown, reflecting the age-related rise in zoster incidence)
- Accurate aetiological diagnosis before treatment remains essential here too - compression therapy correct for venous ulcers is contraindicated with significant arterial disease, and pressure sore prevention (regular repositioning, pressure-redistributing surfaces) is a distinct preventive strategy from wound care of an already-established ulcer
