Statistical power - definition and determinants
Core concept
| H0 true | H0 false | |
|---|---|---|
| Reject H0 | Type I error (alpha) - false positive | Correct (power) |
| Do not reject H0 | Correct | Type II error (beta) - false negative |
- Power = 1 - beta = probability of detecting an effect that is really there
- Conventionally set at 80% or 90%; alpha at 0.05 (two-sided)
- Type II error = missing a real effect -> "no significant difference" is not "no difference"
- A negative trial is uninterpretable until you know it was powered and look at the confidence interval
