Z-score interpretation and normal distribution (percentile equivalence)
Core concept
- z = (x - mean) / SD - how many SDs a value sits from the reference mean
- Reference is age- and sex-matched (and often ethnicity-matched)
- z is dimensionless - it compares across units and across tests
- Normal distribution, area under the curve:
| Range | Central area | One tail |
|---|---|---|
| +/-1 SD | 68% | 16% |
| +/-1.96 SD | 95% | 2.5% |
| +/-2 SD | 95.4% | 2.3% |
| +/-2.58 SD | 99% | 0.5% |
| +/-3 SD | 99.7% | 0.13% |
- z = -2.0 -> ~2nd-3rd percentile (2.3%)
- z = -1.0 -> 16th; z = 0 -> 50th; z = +1.645 -> 95th
